The Hall of Fame – each and every player in any known sport hopes that this is what’s waiting for him at the end of his career. To be included in the hall of fame is an absolute honor, the ultimate goal of all those who aspire to reach the pinnacles of their careers. And this year, nine poker players have gotten closer to their goal by being nominated for inclusion in the Poker Hall of Fame.

Who are the Lucky Ones?

This year’s nominees were chosen both by 15 members of the Poker Hall of Fame as well as 15 members of the media. And though many names were chosen, only nine made the cut. They were Mike Sexton, Erik Seidel, Barry Greenstein, Dan Harrington, Daniel Negreanu, Tom McEvoy, Scotty Nguyen, Men “The Master” Nguyen, and of course, Phil Ivey.

About the Hall of Fame

What sets The Horseshoe apart from other casinos is that it holds the Poker Hall of Fame. Benny Binion, owner of the said casino, created it in 1979 to commemorate those who have made history in the world of poker. Quite the savvy businessman, Binion created the Hall of Fame to serve as a tourist attraction that would draw more people to his casino. The tradition had flourished and today, it’s no longer managed by Benny Binion, but by the WSOP.

However, not all of those who break records left and right in the world of poker can actually get into the Hall of Fame. Getting into this elite list is much harder and more complicated. There are, after all, several conditions that you have to fulfill in order to be considered for the list.

First of all, one must have tangled with the crème of the crop, the best of the best. Next, one must have been a high roller, comfortably betting hundreds of thousands to even millions. Third, one’s performance must be impeccable, consistent, and must have earned the respect of one’s peers. Fourth, one must have “stood the test of time”, so to speak, and had a long, distinguished, and successful career. This is mainly the reason why the 20somethings who are blazing through the tables today, like Annette, ElkY, and Durrrr, cannot be nominated, even though their records are already more than impressive. These great players cut their teeth playing poker online and have moved into live play. These online poker players are sure to succeed in the live poker world and will have a chance at nomination in the future.

The last clause is meant for the non-players who manage to make it to the Poker Hall of Fame. Their contributions must have made a large impact on the growth and success of poker and the results must be lasting and undoubtedly positive.
