Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho, both famous poker pros, lied about their profession in the Amazing Race Debut. They told their fellow players that they were counselors for a non-profit organization, a two-pronged move designed to make themselves seem nicer than they really were and to make the others believe that they were real world grinders, not poker pro’s with endorsement deals.

A Tasteless Bluff

Shame, shame, shame – there are simply some skills that have to stay at the poker table, and one of them is the ability to bluff. Bluffing about having a Royal Flush is one thing, but to lie about being non-profit workers, well, that’s another thing entirely. Sure, the logic behind their little fib was sound enough: make others believe they were nice so that nobody with be on guard against them. You almost have to admire their tenacity, their guts – almost. Their cover was effectively broken when a poker fan recognized them at the airport. Instead of keeping their bluff, though, these two poker stars practically preened underneath all the attention they were getting, completely ignoring the fact that the other players – the ones they had fed the lie to – were within earshot.

Poker Face doused by Wasabi

When it came to the Sushi Roulette challenge, Maria Ho’s poker face was so effectively doused by the Wasabi roll that her earlier bluff almost became believable. She failed to eat her first wasabi roll within the time limit and had to do it once more. She was practically crying, so close to giving up. Luckily, she did manage to finish the challenge the second time around, with only 2 seconds left at the clock.

Counting Skills, non-existent?

After the challenge, they had to escort a group of 20 audience members across Tokyo. Easy enough for those who are talented at counting cards, right? Not quite. At the end of the challenge, Maria and Tiffany lost 2 of their flock, earning themselves a 2-hour penalty.

Aren’t Poker Players supposed to be Perceptive?

And here’s the clincher – near the end of the show, Maria and Tiffany started flirting unabashedly with the brothers McMillen, not at all realizing that they were trying to woo two gay men. Sam and Dan, seemingly better strategists than the poker duo, played their cards right and flirted back. It’ll be very fun to watch all the drama between these two teams unfold in the following episodes.

Indeed, these two females might be talented at poker; but at the amazing race, they’re bound to fold eventually. Luckily, they weren’t eliminated as the first pit stop was a non-elimination leg. We’re bound to see more of them – a good thing, because they’ve proven themselves to be extremely interesting.
